Back to Best Buddies Training Group

On February 1st, Best Buddies Michigan welcomed chapter leaders and advisors from across the state in Rochester Hills for its annual “Back to Best Buddies” training, designed to prepare chapters for a successful second semester. With this year’s playful “I ❤ Best Buddies” theme, participants were met with a vibrant, interactive environment focused on inclusion, leadership, and community-building.

The afternoon training covered essential topics for chapter leaders, including managing members and matches, navigating leadership transitions, preparing for the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC), and planning for signature events such as Best Buddies Month, Spread the Word to End the Word, and the Friendship Walk.

A highlight of the day was the BBLC panel, featuring several of last year’s attendees. Panelists shared their unique experiences, offered advice, and answered questions from the audience, giving participants firsthand insight into what to expect and how to make the most of the conference.

“We were blown away by the energy and engagement of everyone who attended,” said Lydia Goff, Best Buddies Michigan Lead Program Manager. “These trainings are such an important way for our chapter leaders to feel supported and inspired. Hearing directly from past BBLC attendees was an incredible way for everyone to learn and get excited for this opportunity. We couldn’t do this without each and every one of you—thank you for leading with such big hearts!”

The training continues a tradition of fostering leadership and friendship within the Best Buddies community. Attendees left with new strategies to strengthen their chapters, enhance member experiences, and make the second semester as inclusive and engaging as possible. Many participants expressed excitement about implementing fresh ideas and collaborating with peers statewide.

Best Buddies Michigan has grown rapidly in recent years, and events like Back to Best Buddies help ensure that every chapter has the tools and knowledge to thrive. With passionate leaders at the helm, the organization is poised to continue promoting friendship and inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the state.

As the second semester gets underway, Best Buddies Michigan looks forward to seeing the impact these inspired leaders will make in their schools and communities—and celebrating more moments of connection, learning, and fun along the way.

Race to November Zoom Call

Best Buddies Michigan is proud to celebrate the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Best Buddies chapter as the winner of our “Race to November 1st” challenge!

This statewide initiative encouraged school chapters across Michigan to complete and submit all key program metrics in BB360 by November 1, including membership applications, active matches, and hosted events. Chapters that met all requirements by the deadline were entered for a chance to win a special prize, and several schools across the state rose to the challenge.

GVSU’s chapter successfully completed all required components, demonstrating strong organization, follow-through, and commitment to building a thriving Best Buddies program. Their efforts reflect the behind-the-scenes work that helps chapters grow, stay connected, and ensure participants are fully supported. Accurate and timely data entry in BB360 is essential to tracking impact and strengthening Best Buddies programs statewide, and GVSU exemplified this throughout the challenge.

GVSU Race to Nov Challenge

To celebrate, the GVSU Best Buddies chapter was awarded a BBMI-sponsored movie night, creating a fun and relaxed opportunity for members to connect outside of regular meetings. Best Buddies Michigan also shipped the chapter a movie-themed care package filled with classic theater snacks to help make the night extra special.

The celebration didn’t stop there. During one of their monthly Zoom meetings, GVSU members were surprised with a special appearance from Best Buddies Global Ambassador Josh Felder. Josh, who appeared in the film Champions and danced in the 2021 Super Bowl Halftime Show, joined the call to share about his leadership journey with Best Buddies and the role the organization has played in building his confidence, independence, and advocacy skills.

Josh spoke about recognizing opportunities, stepping into leadership, and the importance of inclusive spaces where everyone is encouraged to grow. His message resonated deeply with chapter members, leaving them inspired to continue strengthening friendships and leadership within their own Best Buddies community.

Congratulations to the Grand Valley State University Best Buddies chapter on this exciting recognition! We are grateful to all chapters who participated in the Race to November 1st challenge and continue to show dedication to our mission of inclusion and belonging across Michigan.

Mexico City, Mexico | November 6–8, 2025
Best Buddies International recently wrapped up a powerful three-day visit to Mexico City, focused on strengthening relationships, refining leadership skills, and deepening program impact across Best Buddies Mexico’s work. Led by Cary Ombres, Senior Vice President of Global Mission Impact & Engagement; Jennifer Allen, Vice President of International Programs & Development; and Blake Campbell, Senior Director of Leadership, the visit highlighted both the strength of the local team and the shared commitment to advancing inclusion throughout Mexico.

Across trainings, site visits, and community events, every moment centered on connection - between staff, participants, volunteers, and leaders working together to build a more inclusive society.

Building Stronger Partnerships
The visit began with a warm welcome at the Best Buddies Mexico office, where local staff and the International Programs team spent dedicated time collaborating, reconnecting, and aligning on shared priorities. Strengthening relationships with the Country Directo Tita Edid de Kahan, and team was a top priority, and open dialogue created space for meaningful exchange around local needs, challenges, and opportunities.

Post-visit feedback reflected the value of this relationship-building focus. All participants reported that the visit strengthened collaboration, with 86% indicating relationships were strengthened at a moderate to very strong level. Staff also shared that they felt heard - 100% reported having full or partial opportunities to express local needs, priorities, and challenges, reinforcing the importance of two-way learning during in-country visits.

Strengths Finding & Impact Training
Leadership development was a central focus of the trip. Through interactive sessions on strengths-based leadership and impact measurement, staff explored best practices in:

  • Identifying individual and team strengths
  • Strengthening communication and problem-solving
  • Utilizing data and reporting to better measure program impact
  • Improving program structure and consistency

The trainings were met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. More than 85% of participants rated the strengths-based leadership training as “very useful,” with no respondents indicating the content was of little or no value. Similarly, over 70% reported they expect to apply what they learned to a great extent in their daily roles, demonstrating both relevance and immediate applicability.

Participants shared that the sessions sparked reflection and confidence, with one team member noting a “personal reset around my role as a coordinator,” while others highlighted renewed clarity around how to apply their strengths to support teammates, volunteers, and participants more effectively.

Workplace Inclusion in Action
On Friday morning, the team visited local job sites to meet with participants, employers, and partners advancing workplace inclusion through Best Buddies Jobs. These visits offered firsthand insight into the transformative power of meaningful employment and the relationships built between participants and inclusive employers.

Engaging directly with program participants and staff allowed the International Programs team to better understand both successes and growth areas within Mexico’s employment initiatives, informing future collaboration and support.

Honoring Community Through Día de los Muertos
The visit concluded with a vibrant Citizens Program Día de los Muertos celebration, bringing together adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities for a day of cultural expression, community, and belonging.

Participants created art, shared traditions, and honored loved ones—beautifully illustrating how Best Buddies programs intersect with local culture to foster authentic inclusion. The event served as a powerful reminder that community connection is at the heart of Best Buddies’ mission worldwide.

Looking Ahead
By the end of the visit, the Best Buddies Mexico team emerged energized, connected, and equipped with new tools to grow their impact. Feedback emphasized strong interest in continued leadership development, particularly around applying strengths within teams, engaging university-level volunteers, and deepening impact-measurement methodologies.

Team members also expressed a desire for sustained engagement through ongoing touchpoints, future trainings, and expanded in-person collaboration, building the momentum created during the visit.

Best Buddies International is proud to support the continued growth of Best Buddies Mexico and looks forward to an exciting year ahead, driven by strong partnerships, empowered leaders, and a shared commitment to inclusion. This visit also reinforced the value of two-way learning, with insights and ideas from Mexico informing and strengthening Best Buddies programs in the United States and beyond.
